Teams meeting chat notes not available after meeting has finished

Eddy asks:

Why can’t I see the meeting chat history from my Teams meeting after it’s ended? Is there a way to keep the chat available?”

Troubleshoot Teams chat persistence issues

The issue you’re experiencing with Teams meeting chat disappearing is probably related to chat persistence settings. Let’s see how to fix this issue. We will start with some troubleshooting that you might be able to do at the user level. If that doesn’t help – you might need the support of your Information Technology group Teams administrator.

Delete your Microsoft Teams offline cache

  • Clear the Teams cache (contact your IT group if you are unable to delete files on your computer).
  • Sign out and sign back into Teams

Check your Meeting settings

  • The meeting organizer can enable chat persistence.
  • Before starting the meeting, go to your Teams meeting options and make sure to enable the “Allow meeting chat” option.

Access past meeting chats to verify that meeting chats are kept

  • Open the Teams calendar (you can also access it from Microsoft Outlook web or desktop).
  • Find the past meeting and click on it.
  • Look for the chat tab in the meeting details.
  • Note that for channel meetings the chat should automatically persist in the channel.
Check the channel’s Posts tab for the meeting chat.

Update your Teams version

First off ensure that you are running the latest Teams version and update it if needed. Then Update Teams to the latest version and try again.

Check your organization’s Teams policies

Next, you will need to contact your IT group.

  • It might be that Teams Chat persistence was disabled by your IT admin.
  • Contact your IT support if you believe this should be enabled.
