When Outlook links open in the wrong Edge profile, the browser may land on an account-error page even though you are already signed in. The link itself is usually valid. Edge has simply routed an external link into a profile whose cookies and Microsoft 365 identity do not match the message or document.
The fix depends on which layer made the choice. Edge has a default profile for external links, Outlook can specify how web links open, automatic profile switching can override a general preference for particular sites, and an organization can enforce browser behavior through policy. Check those layers in that order and test with a harmless Microsoft 365 link.
First identify the routing decision
Open Edge and select the profile icon near the address bar. Note the exact names of the profile you want Outlook to use and the profile that actually opens. Generic labels such as Profile 1 and Profile 2 are easy to confuse, so rename them temporarily if needed.
Then click two different links from Outlook:

Choose an Edge profile for external links
In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Profile preferences. Find Default profile for external links and select the work or personal profile that should receive links from desktop apps. You can also open edge://settings/profiles/multiProfileSettings in the address bar if the navigation label differs in your build.
- Select the intended Edge profile before changing the setting.
- Set Default profile for external links to that profile rather than Last used.
- Close every Edge window so the test is not influenced by an already active window.
- Reopen Outlook and click a public link, followed by a Microsoft 365 link.
- Confirm the profile badge and signed-in account on both destinations.
If you routinely mix work and personal sessions, separating those browsing identities clearly makes the routing choice easier to verify. Give each profile a distinct name and color, but do not delete the unwanted profile merely to force link behavior; deleting it also removes that profile’s local browser data from the device.
Review automatic profile switching
On the same Profile preferences page, inspect Automatic profile switching and any custom site-switch entries. A rule for office.com, SharePoint, or another work domain can intentionally override the default external-link profile. Remove or change only the site entry that contradicts your intended routing.
Microsoft’s current Edge policy documentation also distinguishes between a primary work profile, a user-selected external-link profile, and a profile specified by an app. That is why a single dropdown may appear correct while Outlook links still use another identity on a managed computer.
Check how Outlook chooses a browser
In classic Outlook for Windows, open File > Options > Advanced and look for Open hyperlinks from Outlook in. In new Outlook, open Settings > General > Files and links if that setting is available. Choose either Microsoft Edge or Default Browser according to your workflow.
This setting chooses the browser, not necessarily the Edge profile. If Outlook uses the system default browser, confirm the Windows default for HTTP and HTTPS links under Settings > Apps > Default apps. If Outlook explicitly uses Edge, return to Edge Profile preferences for the identity choice.
Organizations can manage the Outlook and Teams web-link experience centrally. Microsoft documents a Choose Which Browser Opens Web Links policy, while newer Edge policies can prioritize an app-specified profile. If the Outlook control is missing, locked, or reverts after sign-in, ask IT which policies apply before editing the registry.
Clean up ambiguous profile state
Several nearly identical Edge profiles can make a correct setting look wrong. Open each profile and verify the email address shown under Settings > Profiles. Sign out of an account only if it is attached to the wrong profile; do not sign out of the entire browser while troubleshooting one identity.
If a profile is damaged or was created with the wrong account, follow a clean browser-identity setup and test it before moving bookmarks or removing the old one. Keep one known-good profile open, set it as the external-link destination, and then click an Outlook link while watching the profile badge.
Also test without an Edge shortcut pinned to the taskbar. A shortcut can be pinned to a specific profile, but that shortcut does not necessarily control links launched from Outlook. The external-link preference and applicable policies remain the important settings.
Why the profile can still change for one website
Identity-aware Microsoft 365 sites can redirect between accounts after the page opens. If Edge launches the correct profile but SharePoint displays the wrong tenant, inspect the accounts already signed in at the site. Sign out of the incorrect web account, close that tab, and retry in the same profile.
Conversely, if the profile badge itself changes, return to Automatic profile switching. A custom switch rule is more specific than the general external-link choice. On a managed device, an administrator may also use Edge policies that give Outlook’s app-specified profile priority.
Avoid clearing all cookies as the first response. That hides the identity mismatch temporarily and signs you out of every site, but it does not change which Edge profile Outlook launches.
Common questions about Outlook-to-Edge profile routing
Why does Edge use the last profile I had open?
The external-link preference may still be set to Last used, or a policy may use the last active profile when no fixed profile is defined. Select a named profile under Profile preferences, close all Edge windows, and retest from Outlook. If it reverts, check for management indicators on the settings page.
Why do only SharePoint and Microsoft 365 links switch profiles?
Those domains may have custom Automatic profile switching entries, or the service may redirect based on the accounts already signed in within the chosen profile. Compare the profile badge before and after the redirect. A badge change points to Edge routing; an account change inside the same badge points to website session state.
Can Outlook force a work profile even when Edge says otherwise?
It can on managed configurations. Current Edge policy options allow an app-specified profile from Outlook or Teams to take priority over the user’s general external-link selection. A missing or locked control is a strong signal to ask IT about the applied Microsoft 365 Apps and Edge policies.
Should I change my Windows default browser?
Only if you want Outlook to use that browser and Outlook is configured for Default Browser. Changing the Windows default does not solve a wrong-profile problem when Outlook is explicitly set to Edge. Verify the browser choice and Edge profile choice as two separate decisions.
Confirm the identity, not just the window
A successful test ends with the intended profile badge and the intended signed-in web account. Test one public link and one work-protected link after closing Edge, because an existing window can conceal the routing rule. If the setting stays put on an unmanaged PC, the change is complete. If it resets or only protected sites switch, provide IT with the two profile names, the tested URL domain, and screenshots of the relevant managed settings so they can identify the policy layer quickly.
