How to remove active and archived channels in Slack?

Here’s a question from Barbara:

Our organization has brought in the online collaboration tool- Slack, a year back. Recently, I got into a different team in the same project and now that I see, I have more active channels and archived channels in which only few are unnecessary for my new project. So is there anyway I can remove channels that are no longer necessary?

Remove Slack active channel

  • Open your slack and right click on the channel in sidebar and select Additional options.
  • Click on Delete this channel at the bottom.
  • Check on Yes, permanently delete this channel and then hit Delete Channel.
  • The channel is removed from your workspace.

Archive a Slack active channel

Let’s first discuss about how we can archive a channel before we move on to removing an archived channel.

  • Open your slack and right click on the channel in sidebar and select Additional options.
  • Click on Archive this channel.
  • Select Yes, archive this channel.
  • Now, your active channel is archived.

Delete archived Slack channels

  • Open your slack and click on More from the options provided in sidebar.
  • Select Channel Browser.
  • Click on the Filter option that can be found right below the search box.
  • Click on the Channel type dropdown box and select Archived channels.
  • Click on the archived channel that needs to be removed.
  • Click on show details icon found at the top corner of the channel.
  • Click on More icon and select Delete #channelname.
  • Check on Yes, permanently delete …
  • Now go ahead and hit Delete Channel.
  • Now the archived channel is removed from your workspace.
