How to join a Microsoft teams meeting as a guest?

If you have received a Microsoft Teams meeting link from a customer or supplier but are not set up you with an Office 365 subscription nor do you have the Microsoft Teams app on your computer, good news, you can still join the meeting. To join a meeting on a Windows Desktop, Laptop or a macOS device you can simply open the your Teams meeting link (most probably from your Outlook / Google Calendar) using your web browser. You will NOT need to download the Microsoft Teams app unless you do not have a supported browser installed.

The web browsers that Microsoft Teams supports are Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. If you have one of those browsers installed on your computer, your meeting should open automatically.

If you click the link and your default browse opens on Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, it will not work.

Instead, you will need to right click on the meeting link to copy link. Then, if you have Chrome or Edge, you can open one of them and paste it into the browser address bar.

If you do not have either of those web browsers, you have two options. You can either:

  • Download Chrome or Edge, add as a browser option on your computer.
  • Download the Microsoft Teams app from

Enter the Teams meeting as a guest

Once you have opened your meeting link, you will be able to sign in as a guest. The name you use to sign in with will be the name that shows up on the meeting screen.

You will be asked to grant permission to allow Microphone and Camera options when joining the meeting. It is advisable to allow both options so you can be seen on the screen and have the ability to join the conversation.

Depending on the security settings of the host organization, you might probably be placed in your meeting lobby area, until being admitted into the Teams meeting by one of your hosts.

If you choose to use the web browser option, you will not be able to see all the participants and some texting functionality will be limited but you will still be able to see the host, talk, and join the chat.
