How to unpin Webex meetings from Windows taskbar?

Here’s a question we got from a reader:

I’ve recently started using Webex less frequently for work, and I find the Webex icon on my taskbar is showing up in my Windows system tray. I’d like to remove it to declutter my workspace and improve overall performance of my computer, but I’m not sure how to do this without uninstalling the entire application. Can you guide me through the process of unpinning Webex from my taskbar while keeping the program installed on my computer as I need it occasionally?

Remove Webex from Windows menu bar and macOS dock

Unpinning an application from the vertical or horizontal task bar removes its icon for quick access but doesn’t uninstall the program. This process helps declutter your taskbar while keeping Webex accessible through the Start menu or Applications folder. It’s particularly useful for managing less frequently used applications, optimizing your workflow, and maintaining a clean, organized desktop environment.

Windows users

  • Locate the Webex icon on your taskbar. It typically appears as a blue circular icon with a white ‘W’ inside.
  • Right-click on the Webex icon. This will open a context menu.
  • Look for the option that says “Unpin from taskbar” in the context menu.
  • Left-click on “Unpin from taskbar”. The Webex icon should immediately disappear from your taskbar.
  • If you don’t see “Unpin from taskbar”, look for “More” or “…” and click on it to reveal additional options.
  • If Webex is currently running, you might need to close it first.
    • Click the Start button, then “All apps”.
    • Find Webex in the list, right-click it, and then go ahead and select “More”.
    • Last, choose “Unpin from taskbar”.

macOS users

  • If Webex is in the Dock, simply click and drag the icon out of the Dock.
  • Release the mouse button when you see the “Remove” text appear.

Troubleshooting

  1. If the Webex icon reappears after restart: Ensure you’ve properly unpinned the app and not just closed it. Check your startup programs to make sure Webex isn’t set to launch at startup.
  2. If you don’t seem to find “Unpin from taskbar” option: Make sure you’re right-clicking directly on the Webex icon (W). If the issue persists, try restarting your computer and attempting the process again.
  3. If you are not able to remove from macOS Dock: If the icon is stuck, try restarting the Dock by running “killall Dock” from your macOS Terminal.
  4. If the Webex icon is visible but grayed out: Close Webex completely, including from the system tray, before attempting to unpin.
  5. To re-pin Webex, search for it in the Start menu, right-click, and select “Pin to taskbar”.
