Didier asks: I run Windows XP. I have accidentally deleted my recycle bin icon from the desktop and doesn’t seem to find it anywhere. Can you help me finding it?

Answer:

Thanks for your question. A few readers have approached me on the recommend way to recover a deleted recycle bin. There are multiple ways to solving this issue, including modifying your registry (which i do not recommend!), or restoring the icon manually from the file system. That said, i think that using the free Tweak UI utility from Microsoft is the approach to take.

Go ahead and install the utility on your Windows XP PC. The Recycle bin can can be easily restored from the Desktop tab.

Here's a registry tweak that will allow you to restore your Recycle bin desktop icon if you have previously removed it (applicable to Windows XP).

Not long ago, Shankar proposed a Windows XP registry tweak that will allow you to remove the recycle bin from your desktop. Today, i would like to show you the opposite trick, namely, how to restore the recycle bin icon after it was removed from your Windows XP desktop.

Remember: the implementation of the following trick requires that you manually modify the system registry. This is an advanced task that if done incorrectly can break your operating system and cause a severe data loss. Implement this trick at your own risk.

Backup the registry file. Use the instructions provided in section 2 here.

Click Start, the click Run and type Regedit to open your Registry Editor.

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace.

Right click it, click New and then Key.

Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and click enter.

Go to the right pane, right click the newly created key and double click Default.

Assign a name of your choice to the Recycle bin icon.

Click OK and close the registry editor.

Go to your desktop, the Recycle Bin icon is now restored.

Note: This trick applies to Windows XP – in Vista, it can be done without manipulating the registry.
