How to start page numbering from the second page on a Word document?

Here’s a question from Melinda,

Hi, I am writing a book using Microsoft Word 2010. The first page is obviously the front cover, so I’d like to start the page numbering from the second page. Is there a way to do it?

Thanks for the question, Melinda. There is indeed a way to start page numbering the second page on Word documents, and we’ll guide you through the steps,

  • Open up your document in Word, and add normal page numbering to it via Insert > Page Number > Bottom of Page / Top of Page > [choose your display style].

  • Once you’ve inserted the page numbers, you will notice a new Header & Footer Tools at the top of the window. Click on it, and check the Different First Page option.

  • Now go to Page Number > Format Page Numbers, and set the Start at value to 0. Click OK, and the page numbering will change to the way you wanted it!
