How to restore the recycle bin icon ?
Not long ago, Shankar proposed a Windows XP registry tweak that will allow you to remove the recycle bin from your desktop. Today, i would like to show you the opposite trick, namely, how to restore the recycle bin icon after it was removed from your Windows XP desktop.
Remember: the implementation of the following trick requires that you manually modify the system registry. This is an advanced task that if done incorrectly can break your operating system and cause a severe data loss. Implement this trick at your own risk.
- Backup the registry file. Use the instructions provided in section 2 here.
- Click Start, the click Run and type Regedit to open your Registry Editor.
- Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace. - Right click it, click New and then Key.
- Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and click enter.
- Go to the right pane, right click the newly created key and double click Default.
- Assign a name of your choice to the Recycle bin icon.
- Click OK and close the registry editor.
- Go to your desktop, the Recycle Bin icon is now restored.
Note: This trick applies to Windows XP – in Vista, it can be done without manipulating the registry.
